The World in Turmoil
This course will introduce you to some key issues in the history of the twentieth century. The issues with which the course deals are central to an understanding of the most turbulent century in the world’s history—and to your understanding of the world in which you live.
The course provides a general introduction to global history for students enrolled in the degree of Bachelor of International Studies. It also prepares students for the wide variety of more specialized upper-level courses in European, American, British, Australian and Asian history. The course is designed to complement “Europe, Empire and the World,” the Department’s Semester One course at Level One (HIST 1105).
The goal of the course is to provide students with a university-level introduction to the history of the twentieth century. Students who successfully complete the course will develop their skills as writers and historians. They will learn to evaluate historical evidence, analyse historical problems, and make coherent arguments, both orally and in writing.
